Lake Champlain rests in the valley between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Lake Champlain is a large body of fresh water, approximately 490 square miles in area, and has a maximum depth of approximately 400 feet. The lake was named after the French explorer Samuel de Champlain who encountered it in 1609 and was the scene of multiple naval battles in the American Revolution. Lake Champlain is located at the frontier between Abenaki and Mohawk traditional territories. Its aboriginal name is "Pitawbagok”, meaning 'lake in between'.
